David Ward

David Ward, 48, of Readstown, passed away on Saturday, Oct. 15, 2011 at his home.

He was born on Oct. 25, 1962 to Benjamin and Louise (Chroninger) Ward in Alamogordo, New Mexico. He married Claudia Dull on March 31, 2000. He most recently worked for NuPak Company in Boscobel.
He was a skilled chess player. He had once won the Wisconsin Amateur Chess Championship. He was also an avid Pittsburgh Steeler, Milwaukee Brewer, and sports fan. He also enjoyed golfing.

He is survived by his wife, Claudia; his parents, his father living in Soldiers Grove and his mother living in Oregon; a daughter and a son both of Portland, Oregon; three grandchildren; two sisters and two brothers; numerous nieces and nephews; his many friends at work, and his dogs: Skye Dog and Bella.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents. He will be cremated and services will be held at a later date.

GILBERTVILLE - Denis D. Burrage, 57, of Two Rivers, Wis., formerly of Gilbertville, died at home Monday, Nov. 7. He was born May 10, 1954, in Cedar Falls, son of Hubert and Geraldine Schoville Burrage. He married Carrie Fleshner on Sept. 4, 1982, in Waterloo.

Denis graduated from Don Bosco High School, in Gilbertville. He served in the US Navy. And worked in Water Pollution Control.

Survived by his wife, a daughter and three sons; seven grandchildren; three brothers; four sisters and a brother-in-law.

Denis was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dottie Roquet.

Celebration of Life open house will be from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, at his childhood home, at 613 14th Ave., Gilbertville, IA. There will be a family-directed memorial service at 2pm.

Ione L. Schoville, 75, of Janesville, died on Thursday, Sept. 29, 2011, at Mercy Hospital & Trauma Center, Janesville. She was born in Red Mound, WI, on Dec. 20, 1935, the daughter of Erton and Hazel (McQueen) Raymond. She had been a Janesville area resident for over 50 years, and had been employed by the New Orleans Restaurant and the Wagon Wheel.
Ione is survived by her five children; 10 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; two brothers; many nieces, nephews, other extended family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents; grandson, Gerald Titus III; former husband, Marlin D. Schoville; and three siblings: Ila Horkhammer, Gilbert Raymond and Eunice Worman.
A Funeral Service will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 3, 2011, at BETHEL BAPTIST CHURCH, Janesville, with Rev. Tim Erickson officiat-ing. A visitation will be held on Monday from 10 until 11 a.m. at the CHURCH. Interment will be in Bethel Cemetery, Center Township. SCHNEIDER APFEL SCHNEIDER & SCHNEIDER FUNERAL HOME is as-sisting the family.

Schoville Family Reunion

Annual Schoville Reunion will be held Friday, September 2nd - Sunday, September 4th, 2011.

Friday night is arrival day and meet and greet. Usually a campfire.
Saturday Supper in the park usually around 5pm. And another campfire.
Sunday is a potluck luncheon. Meet and greet at 1pm along with set up of the food. The kitchen is open to use the electrical. Then we will have a prayer and start eating at 1.30 pm.

We have the shelter reserved for Saturday and Sunday, just in case it rains on Saturday night, we can still have a dinner together and stay dry.
Camping? Pay for your camping fees at the gas station.

Grandmother - Eliza Ayers, daughter of George and Harriett (Moon) Ayers.

Edwin married three times.
In 1859 to Martha Doty 1839-1863 and they had one daughter, Merritta Ann 1861-1879.

In 1864 he married Eliza Ayers 1844-1876 and they 4 children - William Oscar 1865-1943, Martha Jane 1868-1936, Laura Lucinda 1872-1847 and Aden Arthur Ward 1874-1958.

In December 1876 he married a third time, to Elizabeth Ayers, his sister-in-law. They had 10 children.

Orville A Schoville, 55, passed away on December 12, 2010. He was the second of three sons born to Doyle I and Amelia (Fuentes) Schoville. His paternal grandparents were Otto and Gladys (Smith) Schoville of Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin and Orville and Hazel (Carter) (Schoville) Holcomb of Readstown, Wisconsin. His maternal grandfather was Manuel Fuentes of Mexico. He was preceded in death by his mother and his grandparents.

SCHOVILLE, Orville Antonio well known to his friends as Six Volt, a long time member of the Border Jumpers M.C. Yuma, died at his home Sunday, December 12, 2010. Six was born September 18, 1955 in Madison, Wisconsin to Doyle Irvin Schoville and Amelia Fuentes Schoville. Right after high school he joined the Air Force where he learned his life long trade as an Electrician. He received an Honorable Discharge June 19, 1979, Phoenix, AZ.
A man of depth and integrity, a man of men, loved by many, feared by a lot, respected by all, he brought out the best in people. We will miss our friend. Memorial Services will be held at Bobby's Territorial Harley Davidson, 2550 E Gila Ridge, Yuma, AZ Saturday, December 18, 2010 at 1:00 p.m.

Geraldine Burrage, age 90, of Gilbertville, Black Hawk County, Iowa, passed away on Wednesday, December 29, 2010 at Parkview Nursing and Rehab Center in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, Iowa.

Geraldine "Geri" Eliza (Schoville) Burrage was born April 28, 1920 at the family home on Trout Creek, near Soldiers Grove, Crawford County, Wisconsin. She was the seventh child and the third daughter of Perley and Eliza (Ward) Schoville. Geraldine was united in marriage with Hubert Burrage, son of Bertha (Rucker) Burrage, on April 6, 1938 in Elkader, Iowa. He preceded her in death on October, 14, 2001.
She worked as a school bus driver for the Waterloo Community Schools for 12 years, retiring in 1982.

Geraldine is survived by four sons, four daughters, three daughters-in-laws, four sons-in-law, thirty-four grandchildren, fifty-three great-grandchildren, fifteen great-great-grandchildren, one brother, two sisters-in-law, a special friend, Shannon and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Hubert; a daughter, Dottie; a grandson, Mark; a granddaughter, Kandle; two sons-in-law, Gene and Gary; five brothers, Fred, Archie, Dorvin, Harrison and Warren; two sisters, Freda and Dorothy.

Robert A. Schoville, 65, of Soldiers Grove, passed away on Saturday, Dec. 25, 2010 at his home. He had spent the Christmas Eve with his family and passed away the following morning.

Robert was born at the family home on Trout Creek, near Soldiers Grove, Crawford County, Wisconsin. He was the sixteenth child and the sixth son born to Fred and Edith (Bailey) Schoville. For 25 years he worked for the Beloit Corporation. He enjoyed being outdoors and gardening. Robert was a die hard Green Bay Packer and Wisconsin Badger fan, and he rarely missed a game.
He is survived by two sons and a daughter; eight grandchildren; seven sisters and three brothers; along with numerous nieces and nephews, friends and family.

He was preceded in death by his parents; five sisters Marjorie, Betty, Phyllis, Donna and Linda; five brothers Marlin, Larry, Freddie, Charles and Randy.

Funeral services will be held at the Church of Christ in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin, on Thursday, December 30, 2010 at 1 pm.

Benjamin Benson 1862-1951 married Abagail "Abby" Dosch 1869-1955 in 1883. They had 3 children that lived to adulthood, Theodosia, Earl Francis and Edward Harold.
Theodosia 1885-1980 married Lee Gilmore Clawson 1887-1971; Earl Francis 1892-1987 married Christena Hooverson 1897-1974 and Edward "Ted" 1900-1982 married Helen Hooverson 1902-1998.
Theodosia and Gilmore had 2 children, a son and a daughter.
Earl and Christena had 4 sons.
Ted and Helen had 2 sons.

Two of Earl and Christena's sons were -
Dr Victor Gordon Benson,1920-1988, a veteran of the US Navy who worked for NASA on the Mercury mission.

William Hoover Benson 1928-1981. William was a member of the 1946 Basketball Team that won the Kickapoo Valley Conference Championship. On 1946 March 21st he enlisted in the Corps of Engineers Hawaiian Depot Regular Army (ancestry.com US WWII Army Enlistment) He completed his U.S. Marine enlistment completed, having served in the Far East.

Billy was married in 1948 to Phyllis Schoville and they had one son. They divorced in 1953 and Billy married a second time in 1954 to Phyllis Skogman. Of this marriage there were 2 sons born.

Phyllis Schoville Benson married for a second time. Of this marriage there were 3 sons born.

In October 1958 William received an Achievement Award from the 3505th USAF Recruiting Group in recognition of his outstanding accomplishments during the fiscal year 1958. A1c William H. Benson is designated the Outstanding AFES Support Airman of the 3505th AFES Recruiting Group for the period and is extended this recognition and appreciation of the USAF Recruiting Service for this effort in the accomplishment of our mission. Billy and his second wife divorced before 1963. Phyllis Skogman Benson married for a second time, in 1963, to Orvin Martin. Orvin died in 1978.

Billy died in 1981. Phyllis Schoville Benson Fairchild died in 1993. Phyllis Skogman Benson Martin died in 2008.

Billy is survived by a three sons, seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren,

The line was drawn down through the middle of the park. Curt, Ed and the rest of the Schoville/Fairchild branch were going to prove they were always part Burrage/Schoville.

And they have the pictures to prove it...

See....they have always had the glasses, the mustaches and the big noses ....these are their pictures when they were younger.

Of course they may have been doctored up a little bit :)

Weekend Attendance

Our attendance seemed to be a little low this year...other family commitments and the economic times. We had a great firework display on Saturday night, with several of the local residents coming down to the park with their kids. Fireworks were visible from their front yards also.

We only had one of Perley and Eliza's children attend this year. Orvin was in attendance from Friday - Sunday. Geraldine was not able to attend this year.

We also had several "visitors" and first time attendees.
Richard, Arnold and Keith Schoville dropped in to visit, they are sons of Harley Schoville, brother of Perley Schoville.
Jim Bailey was able to join us again this year. Jim is a cousin of the descendants of Edith Bailey Schoville.
Tom and Mathew Benson joined us again this year. Tom is the oldest son of Phyllis Schoville, step son of Glenn Fairchild, older brother to Steven, Curt and Ed. Matt is Tom's son.
First time visitors this year were Tina (Burwitz) Elmer, daughter of Annie and Bernie Burwitz; Linh, a foreign exchange student and Marty Flagg, friend of Curt, Ed and Steve Fairchild.
Overall weekend attendance - with the branches that had the most descendants represented for the weekend::
First place: Fred and Edith (Bailey) Schoville branch
Second place: Orvin and Pauline (Potter) Schoville branch
Third place: Geraldine and Hubert Burrage branch
Fourth place: Freda and Clair Wanless branch
Fifth place: Warren and Mary (Zecoff)Schoville branch
Sixth place: Harrison and Portia (Wells) Schoville branch
Tied for Seventh place: Dorothy Baker Rogers, Archie Schoville and Dorvin Schoville families.

Missing for the weekend were members of the Dorothy Baker's, Archie Schoville's and Dorvin Schoville's branches.

Chili and more for supper. This is getting bigger every year. Wine, shrimp, cheese, chili (of course) in about 7-8 different variations, snacks, desserts.
Tami said the wine from Stone Mountain was great. I didn't get any of that but did get a taste of one from Lacrosse.
Then Gary Becker had a fantastic firework show. Started out with lighted illuminaries then the show lasted about 45 min- an hour. While standing on the dike you could see people in their yards watching and there were several of the town residents in the parking lot or on the dike, to watch the fireworks. Mr Hestetune said they were great.

How about Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schoville of Soldier's Grove, Wis. Fred is 39. His charming wife is 35. They have 17 children.

Donna Mae Schoville Stluka

Donna Mae Stluka, 75, of Beloit, Wisconsin, died peacefully on Saturday, December 19, 2009, in Skaalen Sunset Home in Stoughton, WI. She battle Alzheimer's disease for the last few years, and was lovingly cared for by the staff of Skaalen Sunset Home and Hospice of Rock County.
She was born August 5, 1934 in rural Soldiers Grove, Crawford County, WI, the daughter of Fred and Edith Bailey Schoville. Soon after birth, Donna's six siblings fell ill so she could not stay in the home. Her Aunt Frieda and Uncle Buck Clark took her in and ended up raising her as they had no children of their own. Donna was one of 22 children and she maintained relationships with the rest of the family. She spent her childhood in Bosstown and Soldiers Grove until her family moved to Beloit, where she met Michael and they married on July 28, 1951 in Beloit. Donna was a 1952 graduate of Beloit Memorial High School. She worked at the Wagon Wheel Resort as a waitress with several of her sisters and at Beloit College in administration, where she eventually retired after 20 years. She enjoyed painting, playing tennis, gardening, piano, volunteering at church and was a member of the Beloit Tennis club. Donna fulfilled a lifetime dream of traveling to the Holy Land in 1968 with a group of Bethel Bible teachers from Wisconsin. Nearing retirement, she also loved going to Hawaii with her family and friends. Donna was also an avid Badgers and Packers fan.

Donna is survived by her husband, Michael; three children; five grandchildren; seven sisters; four brothers; many nieces, nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, a daughter, Linda Stluka, in infancy; ten sisters and brothers, Marjorie Carlin, Junior Schoville, Betty Roland, Marlin Schoville, Phyllis Fairchild, Larry Schoville, Freddy Schoville, Linda Folgate, Randy Schoville and Charles Schoville. A Celebration of Donna's Life will be at 11.00 am on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Our Savior's Lutheran Church, 749 Bluff Street, Beloit, WI with Pastor Jennifer Jelinek, officiating. Inurnment will be in Shopier Cemetery. Friends may greet the family from 9.00 am until time of service on Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the church.

Soldiers Grove, Wis - Henry Schoville, 74, of Soldiers Grove died Saturday, May 11, in a Viroqua hospital. Services were at 1.30 pm Tuesday in the Soldiers Grove Church of Christ, Rev. Clarence Potter officiated and burial was in the Readstown Cemetery. He was born November 26, 1899, in Crawford County to Mr and Mrs James Schoville, and he married Theresa Felton November 27, 1919. He was employed as a machinist in Beloit 35 years and in the Boscobel School District five years. The family moved to Soldiers Grove in 1962. Surviving are his widow; three sons, Gerald of Soldiers Grove, Gale of Harrison, Illinois; and James of Naperville, Illinois; two daughters, Mrs James Williams of Beloit and Mrs Dennis McMahon of Brodhead; one brother, John of Beloit; three sisters, Mrs Harold Starkey of Benton, Washington; Mrs Angie Marsh of Sequim, Washington and Mrs George Martin of Soldiers Grove; 12 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

The oldest son, Fred, was married and had several children. The military did not take him and he used to tell the story that if they had he would have been the highest paid Private in the service because of his dependents. The second son, Archie, was divorced and had a dependent son. The other four, Dorvin, Harrison, Warren and Orvin all served in different branches. Dorvin was in the Army and served in Egypt; Harrison was in the Marine Corp and was in the South Pacific; Warren was in the the Army Air Corp stationed in England and Orvin was in the Navy aboard the USS Atlanta C-104.

Micah Scovill 1735-1821 served in both the French and Indian War and the Revolutionary War. In 1757 he belonged to the south militia company in Millington Parish. (Captain Cone's Company). Mar 30th to Oct, 1758 he served in the 2nd Regiment, Major Spencer. He had the rank of Corporal. Approx, 1775, age 45, Micah was drafted at Hartland Twp, Litchfield, CT. He was in the Battle of Bunker Hill, at Nova Scotia and at the surrender of Burgeone.

The twins were born on July 24, 1842 in Muskingham County, Ohio. The Singles family was living in Wisconsin by 1850.

Rachel Jane married Warren William Schoville on August 28, 1859 in Belmont, Lafayette Co., WI. Of this marriage were born 9 children, 4 of which lived to adulthood. Rachel Jane died in 1917, at the age of 75 yrs, 3 mos and 9 dys. She is buried in Readstown, Vernon Co., WI.

Alsina Alice married Joseph Wolf Hill on January 1, 1866 in Crawford Co., WI. Of this marriage there were 7 children born, 6 of which lived to adulthood. Alsina Alice Hill died in 1884, at the age of 41 yrs, 5 mos and 16 dys. She had given birth to a daughter, Laura, 8 months earlier. She is buried in Yankeetown Cem., Crawford Co., WI.

Labor day weekend is the Schoville Family Reunion for Perl and Eliza Schoville..

The reunion is in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin and has been there for many, many years. On Friday night we meet for supper and a bonfire. On Saturday we have chili and more. On Sunday it is potluck, everyone brings a hot dish, a cold dish and your own beverage. On Monday it is pack up day to go home.

Now it was not always like this, it used to be just Sunday Potluck dinner. Then it was expanded to include a Chili supper on Saturday and a bonfire. A few years ago it was expanded to Friday night dinner, because so many of the cousins camp and come in on Friday afternoon.
Friday night was meet and reconnect and supper.
Saturday is chili supper with several varieties of chili...mild to very hot.....white chili....one made with beef cubes...then a bean mixture, no meat. We had appetizers, wine, breads and desserts.

Sunday was potluck. We rent the Shelter for this event, so that we can have use of the kitchen and electricity. We had about 15 crock pots full of all kinds of food. Fried chicken, walking tacos, sloppy joes, goulash, jambalaya; salads, vegetables and lots of desserts.

At about 1 o'clock, I welcomed everyone to dinner. I told than that our host had to return home for an urgent matter and that I was going to take his place. I introduced the new people that had come to the dinner, including some that had not been there for a long time. I then asked that we please allow the elder individuals of the group be served first, if they cannot go through the line, then someone go through for them, and to allow those that have small children also go through the line first. That we please wait to go through a second time, so that we know that everyone has had a chance to get something to eat. We had 15 picnic tables set up, and another table so that the ones in wheelchairs/walkers could just wheel up and eat together. Everyone had a great time. Good food and conversations.

After dinner a family meeting (those who wish to participate can do so, those who do not usually go to the campground to visit....personal choice). The meeting was called to order and we then had a treasurer report, discussed new business.....where we discussed and voted on costs of this years reunion; if we still want to install a light on the flag pole (that we had installed at the cemetery a few yrs ago); next years events; costs of an extra porta-potty or possibly emptying the ones we have; fund raising, whether it is through donations or auctions and finally whether the family fund should pay to have someone put flowers at the cemetery on Memorial Day. Discussion followed on all topics, and votes were taken.

After discussions, motions, seconds and voting (yes we do things the democratic way, everyone who is attending gets a vote) it looks like we passed the following:
We had already agreed in a previous years meeting to have a light, and we have decided to go with the solar powered light for the flag, so that we do not have to pay to have an electrician to run electric cable. This will be followed up on.
We will be paying for a bond and costs for fireworks at next years event.
Discussion on fund raising and/or family donations and looks like we may do both, donations and an auction.
Our final item on the agenda was Memorial Day flowers for grandparents grave site. Whether or not this is something that should be paid for by the reunion fund. It was discussed at great length by several members contributing their opinion on this subject. After all discussion, a motion was made, seconded and the Schoville Reunion Fund will not be paying for or reimbursing anyone for cost of flowers at the cemetery. Those individuals who want to put flowers at the cemetery, will do so at their personal cost. The family fund will not be used for this purpose.

We followed this with an auction. We sold about a dozen items and took in several donations.
Then it was down to the park, for more conversations. Another successful year :)

The town is in the middle of the map, where the Kickapoo river comes in from Vernon County and is shaped like a horseshoe. The river is all twisted through the area and there are two roads, one on each side of the river. The road on the right side of the river, is easily seen, while the one on the left runs on the property line between A Peterson's property and goes north.

Soldiers Grove - James Schoville, 83, retired farmer, died Friday in his home here after a long illness. Born in the town of Clayton, he was married October 20, 1895 to Rachel Kelley in Trout Creek. They farmed in the Soldiers Grove area until moving into town a few years ago. The Schoville's observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1945. Surviving are his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Gladys Waterman, Oshkosh; Mrs Clem Marsh, Soldiers Grove, and Myrtle, at home; five sons, Lawrence and Dewey, Soldiers Grove; Paul and Henry, Beloit, and John, Prentice; two brothers, Harvey, Soldiers Grove, and Henry, Boscobel; 28 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Another son William, was killed in World War 1. Funeral services will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. in the Christian Church of Soldiers Grove with the Rev. Roy Williams, Viroqua, officiating, assisted by the Rev. Joseph Randell, Soldiers Grove and the Rev. Leslie Milan, Readstown. Burial will be in the Readstown cemetery. The body was taken to the Chitwood funeral home, Soldiers Grove.

Willie was the first person, from Soldiers Grove that was killed in WWI. The American Legion in Soldiers Grove is named in his honor. There is a headstone at the Somme American Cemetery in Bony, France for him and there is a headstone in Readstown, WI with his name on it along with his family members. He was a member of the 28th Infantry, 32 Infantry Division killed in action during the capture and defense of Cantiguy, France from May 27th to 31st, 1918. He is listed as missing in action or buried at sea. He is probably buried in an unmarked grave at the battleground.

Orla Mae died at the age of 12, on September 13, 1937. She and a classmate were walking to the one room school house, Trout Creek School, after having a long weekend for the county fair, when they were hit by a car. The young man that hit them was going to the farm where his father was working, which happened to be the same farm that the two little girls fathers were also working. Orla Mae died instantly and the other little girl, Bonnie, died soon after. The school was closed for a week.

Warren William Schoville, Mondamin, IA, age 66, passed away on May 19, 2009 passed away after a courageous battle with cancer. Warren was born on March 8, 1943 in Waterloo, Iowa, to Warren A and Mary (Zecoff) Schoville.
Warren (Sonny) served his country honorably as a paratrooper in the 101st Airborne from 1965 through 1967. Warren will always be remembered as a man of his word. Warren worked for Ag-Bag until their closure as the maintenance supervisor, and held a similar position with Vickers Manufacturing in Omaha. Warren also had a business doing siding work, and installed siding on many homes in the Blair area. Warren was an excellent golfer, avid fisherman and loved working with his hands doing woodwork, gardening and mechanical repair. His work ethic and outdoor activities kept him busy right up to his untimely death. Always living life to the fullest, helping others and providing for his family are attributes that served him well.
Warren is survived by his wife, one daughter, three sons and daughter-in-laws; 7 Grandchildren and 2 Great-grandchildren, his Mother, one brother and five sisters. He was preceded in death by his father.
His wife of 42 years, his children and the many friends and relatives celebrate his entrance to eternity with Jesus at the West Lawn Hillcrest Cemetery on May 26th, at 11:00AM.

Donald Dean Schoville was born on Sunday, November 25, 1962 in Viroqua, Wisconsin to Harrison and Portia (Wells) Schoville. He passed away at the LaCrosse Lutheran Hospital on Tuesday, February 14, 1995, at the age of 32 years. He graduated from Kickapoo High School in Viola, Wisconsin. He served in the National Guard in Viroqua for several years. He worked in construction in Texas for one year. He then entered active duty in the US Army in January of 1984. He was stationed in Ft Riley, Kansas; Korea and Germany. He then served in the Gulf War. He retired from the US Army in May of 1992 at Ft Bliss, Texas. In recent years he had been residing in Viola and had worked at Nelson Muffler. Don's life focused on family, friends and service to his country. As a non-commissioned officer, he received numerous awards for his excellent performance of duty, which included overseas tours in Korea, Germany and combat duty in Operation Desert Storm. He was also an avid trout fisherman, family genealogist and student of military and western history. He was a beloved uncle of his many nephews and nieces. His many hobbies included hunting and riding his Harley Davidson motorcycles. He was preceded in death by his father. He is survived by his mother; three brothers; and one sister. Terry Lee Baker, 68, of Canyon Lake, Texas, died Monday, June 15, 2009, of natural causes, peacefully in his camper in the loving care of his amazing wife. Private services were held with his immediate family. Terry Baker was born April 25, 1941, in Sabula, Iowa. He was the last baby to be delivered in Sabula, the only island-town of Iowa, before births eventually became procedural in near-by larger cities.
He was the son of Milford Baker and Dorothy (Schoville) Rogers, and devoted stepfather, Benjamin Rogers. He graduated from Sabula High School in 1959. He then enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in which he served as an air-traffic controller. His service included a tour in Vietnam and later he resided in Los Angeles, continuing his service to his country as a police officer. Terry later moved to Chicago, Illinois, after his brief service with the police department, beginning his new career with the printing industry. While in Chicago he married xxxx on March 25, 1971, and soon after had their first two children. Terry took a sabbatical from the printing industry and began driving for Continental Trailways, often taking his baby daughter with him among his excursions. Eventually Terry found himself back in the printing industry after many adventures on the road. In 1976, Terry welcomed his third child into this world. Through much perseverance he successfully fulfilled the requirements of barber school and opened his own barber shop in Sabula, Iowa with the help of his supportive family. Terry then pursued many other dreams throughout his life, living for every moment and supporting his family along the way. He enjoyed traveling (including 5 years in Europe), camping, fishing, golf, Volksmarching, wood carving, inventing, socializing and loving his family.
Terry found balance with life, an ability to be an amazing father and a best friend to his children. He was a devoted husband and bestowed priceless values to his family. Mr. Baker is survived by wife of 38 years; one daughter; two sons; a sister, and two brothers; a half brother; son-in-law; two daughters-in-law; and 6 grandchildren. He was an operator at Iowa City Waste Water Facility. He loved to play pool, mushroom hunting, campfires and the outdoors. He was an avid Packer fan. He loved his canine children, Gracie & Willey. Clay is survived by his wife, a step daughter and a step son; three foreign exchange daughters; 2 grandchildren; his parents; four sisters, three brothers, and many nieces and nephews. She was born on April 3, 1928 at Trout Creek, Town of Clayton, Crawford Co., Wis. to Clare and Freda (Schoville) Wanless. She married xxxxx Dull on May 1, 1948. They farmed in the Town of Clayton all their married lives. She worked at Boscobel Hospital as a nursing assistant, and later at Sannes Skogdalen as an LPN. She graduated from Soldiers Grove High School and attended SW Tech in Fennimore and Western Wis. Tech in LaCrosse for nurses training. She also delivered meals on wheels for Crawford County. Her hobbies included singing, crosswords, sewing, reading, knitting, and hunting mushrooms. She belonged to North Clayton United Methodist Church and the William A. Schoville Post #220 of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is survived by her husband, three sons; four daughters; 15 grandchildren, 2 step-grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, and 2 step great grandchildren; one daughter in law. She was preceded in death by her son Clay, on December 27, 2008, and her parents. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, Jan. 8, 2009 at 1 PM at North Clayton United Methodist Church Pastor Ethan Larson will officiate and burial will be in the North Clayton Cemetery. Charles W. (Chuck, Willie) Schoville, 58, of Beloit, WI, died Tuesday, February 19, 2008 in his home.
He was born November 1, 1949 in Soldiers Grove, WI, the son of Fred H. and Edith M. (Bailey) Schoville.
Charles owned and operated Schoville Pallets. He was an active member in the fellowship of A.A. for 20 years. Charles cherished spending time with his family, Sunday dinners, fellowship meetings, fishing and lots of leisure reading. He also enjoyed the Wisconsin Badgers and Green Bay Packers.
Survivors include his four children; seven grandchildren; 12 sisters and brothers and 67 nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his parents, nine sisters and brothers, Marjorie Carlin, Junior Schoville, Betty Roland, Marlin Schoville, Phyllis Fairchild, Larry Schoville, Freddy Schoville, Linda Folgate and Randy Schoville.

Mrs Schoville was a payroll comptroller for Waterloo K mart, retiring in 1976. She is survived by her husband; a son, two daughters; six grandchildren and a step grandchild; and four great grandchildren; two brothers, one sister. She was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Keith; a sister, Marilyn; a sister in law, Joan; a granddaughter and a great granddaughter. The memorial service will be at 1.30 pm Wednesday at the First Christian Church in Cedar Falls, with an inurnment at a later date in Hillside Cemetery. There will not be a visitation. Harrison Schoville, 76, of Viola, passed away on Sunday, May 22 at the Vernon Memorial Hospital in Viroqua. He was born near Soldiers Grove on April 19, 1918 to Perly and Eliza (Ward) Schoville. He married Portia W. in Burbank, California on June 9, 1944. During World War II, he served for four years in the Marine Corps, in Pacific Theatre combat. For several years he farmed in the Kickapoo Valley. Later, he worked for John Deere Co. in Waterloo, Iowa. He later retired from Edward Kraemer and Sons Co. of Plain, Wi. He was a member of the Soldiers Grove Church of Christ, and had been Commander of the Hamilton-Harris American Legion Post #447 of Viola. He was an avid fisherman, storyteller, card player and lover of nature. He was preceded in death by his parents and 2 brothers, Fred and Archie. He is survived by his wife, four sons; 1 daughter; 11 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild; 3 brothers; and 3 sisters. Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, May 25, at 7:00 pm at the Sime Funeral Home in Readstown. Family members and friends will conduct the service. Burial will be in the Readstown cemetery. Dorothy Mae Rogers, 80, passed away on June 15, 1955 in Sabula, Iowa.
Dorothy was born on February 5, 1915 to Perl and Eliza (Ward) Schoville in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin. As a young girl she lived on a farm and attended school in a one room school house. At the age of 18, she married Milford Baker and there were 5 children born of this union. They later moved to Sabula, Iowa and were divorced. She then met and married Ben Rogers. He preceded her in death on February 26, 1995.
Dorothy is survived by three sons, one daughter, grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters and three brothers. She was preceded in death by her husband; an infant son, Gordon; her parents and three brothers, Fred, Archie and Harrison.

Ben Rogers was born on April 26, 1926 in Sabula, Iowa. He passed away at the Veterans Hospital in Johnson County, Iowa on February 26, 1995

Milford Baker was born April 06, 1915 in Spring Green, Sauk Co., Wisconsin to Jacob and Elsie (Bills) Baker. He married Dorothy Schoville and they had 5 children. They later divorced. Milford remarried to Mildred Nielsen and he had a son, with his second wife. Milford passed away September 16, 1982 in Colorado. Survivors are his wife, 4 sons and a daughter, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Dorvin P. Schoville
Dorvin P. Schoville, 82, of Omaha, Nebraska passed away on Monday, July 31, 1995. He was born on Monday, June 23, 1913 in Soldiers Grove, Wisconsin to Pearl and Eliza (Ward) Schoville. He moved to Waterloo, Iowa where he worked at the John Deere Tractor Works. He met Esther Hinkle of Waterloo and they were married on June 20, 1937. When the war broke out, he enlisted in the Army Air Corps on August 27th 1943 at Camp Dodge, Des Moines, IA. His term of enlistment was the duration of the war, plus 6 months. During the war he served in the European Theater. The marriage did not survive,the war and the separation, and Dorvin and Esther were divorced in December of 1944.
After being discharged from the service he returned to Waterloo, Ia where he returned to work at John Deere. In Waterloo he met, his soon to be bride, Marlys Jacobsen and they were married on April 20, 1947 in Hannibal, Missouri. He changed jobs in the mid 1950's and started working in the Heating and Cooling business. In the 1960's Dorvin and his family, which now included 5 children, moved to Omaha, Nebraska, where he continued this same occupation.
Dorvin is survived by his loving wife, Marlys; two sons and two daughters; two sisters, three brothers, his mother-in-law; grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by a son, Jack T.; his parents; three brothers, Fred, Archie, Harrison and a sister Dorothy.
Funeral services will be on Thursday, August 3, 1995 at 1:30 p.m. at the Wildewood Christian Church in Papillion, Nebraska with Pastor Jack Gabbert, officiating. Interment will be at Hillcrest Memorial Park in Omaha, NE. Graveside service will be done by the V.F.W., South Omaha Post 2704.

Marlys J. Schoville, age 80, passed away on December 12, 2007 in Omaha, Nebraska. She was born in Cedar Falls, Iowa to Thorvald "Toby" and Marion Baker Jacobsen. On April 20, 1947 she married Dorvin P. Schoville in Hannibal, Missouri. Freda Gander, age 93 of Viroqua, formerly of Soldiers Grove, passed away on Thursday, February 3, 2005 at Vernon Manor in Viroqua.
She was born on July 2, 1911 in the town of Clayton, Crawford County to Perl and Eliza (Ward) Schoville. She married Clare Wanless in 1931. He passed away in 1968. She married Gerald Gander in 1973, he passed away in 1999. She lived in Crawford County all of her adult life. She did a lot of wallpapering and painting. She also enjoyed working in tobacco and raising turkeys.
She is survived by one daughter, eight grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother and a sister. She is preceded in death by her husbands; her parents; five brothers, Archie, Warren, Fred, Harrison and Dorvin; and one sister, Dorothy Baker.
Funeral services were held on Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at North Clayton United Methodist Church with Wayne Rayner officiating. Burial was in the Sugar Grove Cemetery. Friends called at the Sime Funeral Home in Readstown on Monday evening and at the church on Tuesday before the time of services.

BELOIT - Mrs Fred Schoville, 61, mother of 19 children, died Wednesday in a Beloit nursing home after a short illness. The former Edith Bailey was born in Soldiers Grove and lived in Beloit for 45 years. She was employed as an inspector at the Admiral Corp at Harvard, Ill. In 1950, the Schoville family made national new when it gathered in Soldiers Grove to celebrate the couple's 25th wedding anniversary. A 20th child died in infancy. The funeral will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in the Overton-Schoenfeld Funeral Home, where friends may call after 2p.m. today. Surviving are her husband; seven sons and twelve daughters (I have removed the names to protect the privacy of the living individuals) She is also survived by six brothers, four sisters and by 60 grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. Village Couple Have 21 Children; Happy Family
SOLDIERS GROVE, Wis.—One of the largest families in the nation lives on a farm on the edge of the small town of Soldiers Grove (population 700). The family recently gained national prominence with the birth of the 21st child, a boy, to Mrs. Fred Schoville. The 40 year old Soldiers Grove woman declared at a family reunion last year that her son, Charles, then 6 months old, would "be the last, but I've been wrong so often." Mrs. Schoville has had 12 girls and nine boys in her 26 years of married life. Of her 20 living children, the oldest is 25. One boy died in infancy. Schoville, 44, rents a 280 acre farm and earns extra money selling oil burners, oil and calendars. "We've been a happy family," Mrs. Schoville told reporters. "It's because we trust in the Lord, and the oldest children have always been willing to take care of the younger ones."

He preceded her in death. Mrs. Schoville leaves 171 direct descendants. Pearl A. Schoville Died Friday After Lengthy Illness
Pearl Schoville, well-known farmer of the Trout Creek community passed away last Friday at his home following an illness of several month duration. His death occurred at 9.30 pm in the midst of sorrowing family. The funeral was held Monday afternoon from the Christian Church, Soldiers Grove, and interment made in the Readstown cemetery. Officiating were the Reverend F.W. Vorpahl and Philip Davenport. Pall bearers were George Miller, Nick Skrede, Madison Hill, Buck Lathrop, Lester Buroker and Charles Maybee. Vocal offerings were made by Mr. .and Mrs. Geo Fetty and Rev and Mrs. A.L. Asp.

Spent Life Here
Pearl Schoville was the youngest son of Warren and Rachel Schoville. He was born July 3, 1885, and died on April 4, 1941, at the age of 55 years, 9 months and 1 day. His early years were spent on the parental farm. On July 25, 1906, he was united in marriage to Eliza Ann Ward; to this union were born three daughters and six sons. Besides his grief stricken wife, he is survived by his nine children; Warren and Orvin at home; Harrison and Archie of Waterloo, Iowa; Dorvin of Dewar, Iowa; Fred, Mrs. Freda Wanless and Mrs. Geraldine Burrage of Soldiers Grove; Mrs. Dorothy Baker of Sabula; eighteen grandchildren; and three brothers, Harvey and James of Soldiers Grove and Henry of Boscobel. His parents, three sisters and two brothers preceded him in death. The deceased accepted Christ as his Savior and was baptized in 1920 at Soldiers Grove. He has been a firm believer and maintained the faith to the time of his passing. He was a loving husband and father, well beloved by all who knew him. He will be sadly missed in the home and in the wider circle of his friendships.

Correct Spelling of names

My grandfather's name was Perley Albert Schoville and there is has always been some speculation on the correct spelling of his name.
I choose to spell it the way he had it on his marriage license to my grandmother, Eliza Ann Ward. And for that occasion he spelled it "Perley" and I use that name or an abbreviated Perl.
Now that is not to say that he did not spell his name other ways. He did. My father has his employment book and there are a lot of variations in that book, both the first and the last name.

For his obituary my Grandmother spelled his name Pearl.
My grandparents used his name for the middle name of one of their sons. One of my cousins has it as a first name and it is spelled another way.
So to say one way is correct, I cannot say which one is correct. But I will use the Perley or Perl spelling.

We also have the same thing with the last name. Which way is correct? This branch uses the spelling with the H - Schoville.
Warren William, my gr grandfather, used Schoville. Most of his descendants use the H, we do have one cousin, who changed his back to the "original" and goes by Scoville. Again they are all correct for that branch, but for our branch we will use the Schoville spelling

Enoch SCOVELL, son of Micah and Mary (Cowdrey) Scovil was born August 20, 1790 Connecticut and died February 16, 1842 Trumbull County, Ohio. In June of 1807 he married Eunice WARREN, daughter of Abijah Warren, who was born January 08, 1790 in Ontario County, New York and died September 12, 1822 in Ontario County, New York.
They had five (5) children Michael, Edward, Eunice, Albert, Mary and William. Enoch married a second time aft 1822 to Elizabeth "Betsey" Coburn 1796-1831 and they had 3 children -Albert 1826-?, Mary 1827-1892 and William 1830-1842. After Betsey died he took a third wife Dennis Brown, but family history says that they ended up divorced.
Edward used the name Scoville (no H) and moved to Indiana where he raised his family. Eunice married Robert Pettigrew and lived in Trumbull County, Ohio; and Mary married Harrison Bacon.

Enoch's and Mary's oldest son, Michael SCOVILLE (SCHOVILLE) was born on January 11, 1812 in Ontario Co., NY and died on February 20, 1885 in Rome Ashtabula Co., Ohio. On December 25, 1833 in Bazetta, Trumbull Co., OH Michael married Mary Elizabeth HULL, daughter of William and Elizabeth (Morford) Hull. Mary was born June 28, 1816 in Sharon, Pennsylvania and died on March 03, 1911 Rome, Ashtabula Co., OH. Of this union there were twelve (12) children born, of which 9 lived to be of adult age.

A. Warren William SCHOVILLE, their oldest child - was born on October 04, 1834 in Trumbull Co.., OH and died October 25, 1924 in Soldiers Grove, Crawford Co., WI. His maternal grandparents were living in Grant County, WI and he moved west to live with them.
In Wisconsin, Warren met and married Rachel Jane SINGLES, daughter of James and Mary Ann (Hall) Singles. Rachel was born on July 24, 1842 in Muskingham Co., PA and had moved from Ohio with her father and siblings. She died on November 02, 1917 Soldiers Grove, Crawford Co., Wisconsin. Both Warren and Rachel, along with numerous descendents are buried in Readstown Cemetery, Readstown, Vernon Co., WI, which is 8 miles from Soldiers Grove, Crawford Co., WI. (Note: in the book Scovills in America, Warren is listed as William W)

The family name that the branch that I am off of uses the spelling Schoville. But ancestors of this family have used several spellings. From information that has been passed down through the family, it appears that the name was SCOVIL, SCOVILL or SCOVILLE. Apparently 4 generations back from me, with my grandparents Mical and Mary (Hull) Scovill, there was a name change. As anyone that does family history will know, the children are named after grandparents, parents and siblings of the adults in the families. Therefore lots people with the same name living in the same area. Well according to family history GrgrgrGrandmother Mary (Hull) Scovill added the letters H and E to the last name and to Mical's name as well. So they were now Michael and Mary Schoville. She wanted her mail, not a sibling or one of the relatives mail. The oldest son of Michael and Mary Schoville, was Warren Schoville. His birth name was William but he went by Warren and was known as Warren William. He was born in 1834 in Ohio. When he was 18 yrs of age, he went west to Grant County, Wisconsin to live with his maternal grandparents, William and Elizabeth (Morford) Hull. His grandmother and 2 of his cousins, daughters of his Uncle Elisha Hull, all died in 1860 of lung flu.
In 1859 he was married to Rachel Singles, daughter of James and Mary Ann Singles, who had also migrated from Ohio. They married in Belmont, Lafayette County, Wisconsin. He was a teamster and worked for the lead mines in Grant County. In 1862 they were living in Crawford County and he enlisted in the Union Army to fight in the Civil War.
In 1864 Rachel purchased 40 acres of land for the amount of taxes due, which was $4.75. This land was in the Clayton, Crawford County, Wisconsin. In 1865, after being mustered out at Louisville, Kentucky, Warren became prominent is town affairs and served on the Town Board in Clayton, Crawford Co., WI.
Warren and Rachel had 9 children, but only 4 of the boys lived to adulthood. They were James J, Harvey, Harley and Perley.
Warren died in 1924 and Rachel died in 1917.
The VFW Post in Soldiers Grove is named after one of their grandsons, Willie, who died in WWI and the land that Rachel purchased is still owned by a descendent of Warren W. and Rachel (Singles) Schoville.
